English and Citizenship

English + Civics = Citizenship

BCNH has helped scores of refugees become US Citizens. We strive to continue that work.

With financial support from the NH Office of Health Equity, we have run an English and American Civics class for older Bhutanese refugees for several years. The course is designed to prepare students for their naturalization exams. Before COVID, that class met three mornings a week in our Manchester office. Since March of 2020, students have learned over the phone and have continued to become citizens.

On Nov 1, 2022, we resumed in-person English classes to New Americans. Running on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, these classes are ideal for beginners who need to learn the basics to qualify for good jobs and for more advanced students working to improve their English skills.

In late 2023, we will resume in-person classes to prepare New Americans for their citizenship exams, thanks to support from the NH Charitable Foundation.

(On October 6, 2022, Hussain Amiri, a BCNH Case Manager, became a citizen. Fellow case manager Manju Gurung was there to share the moment.)
